چکیده

We present a new model of human mate choice incorporating non-negligible courtship time. The courtship period is used by individuals to strategically swap to better partners when they become available. Our model relies on realistic assumptions about human psychological constraints and the specifics of the human social environment to make predictions about population level patterns that are supported by empirical data from the social sciences.

Modeling Mate Choice in Monogamous Mating Systems with Courtship

We present a conceptual framework for the study of mate choice in monogamous mating systems with non-negligible courtship time. Within this framework, we develop a mate choice model for the common case where individuals have a changing social network of potential partners. The performance and robustness of different agent strategies is evaluated, emphasizing the important role that courtship pl...

Male mating costs in a polygynous mosquito with ornaments expressed in both sexes.

Male mate choice in species with conventional sex roles is difficult to explain and has, therefore, been the focus of many recent theoretical models. These models have focused on variance in female quality and, to a lesser extent, male investments/costs associated with mating. In this study, we investigate the costs of courtship and copulation in the polygynous mosquito Sabethes cyaneus. In thi...

Mate Choice Drives Evolutionary Stability in a Hybrid Complex

Previous studies have shown that assortative mating acts as a driver of speciation by countering hybridization between two populations of the same species (pre-zygotic isolation) or through mate choice among the hybrids (hybrid speciation). In both speciation types, assortative mating promotes speciation over a transient hybridization stage. We studied mate choice in a hybrid vertebrate complex...

Male Proneness to Verbal Display Production

The Darwinian theory of sexual selection predicts languagerelated sex differences in humans originating from and relevant for mate choice. Due to past sex-different selection pressures, it can be assumed that men are more prone to verbal displays than women, both in intrasexual competition and in intersexual selection (i.e., courtship). They should benefit more from high verbal proficiency in m...

Divergence of premating behaviors in the closely related species Drosophila subquinaria and D. recens

Most animal species use distinctive courship patterns to choose among potential mates. Over time, the sensory signaling and preferences used during courtship can diverge among groups that are reproductively isolated. This divergence of signal traits and preferences is thought to be an important cause of behavioral isolation during the speciation process. Here, we examine the sensory modalities ...
